Repeal and Replace?

By Brian Altenhofel - Posted on 16 April 2010

"Repeal and Replace" seems to be the mantra of the Republican party for this election in reference to the healthcare monstrosity that was recently passed into law. The question that you need to ask yourself is, "After Bush's 8 years, 6 of which with a Republican Congress, can the Republicans really be trusted to do as they say?"

The answer is "absolutely not." The big campaign promise in 2000 was to privatize Social Security. Obviously, that didn't happen. In fact, during those six years with Republican control of both the legislative and executive branches (not to mention a conservative judicial branch), we got No Child Left Behind, The PATRIOT Act, and a massive expansion of Medicare (which, by the way, is a GREAT precursor to Obamacare). After Congress changed hands, we got the Wall Street and Detroit Bailouts.

This is the same party that brought you the individual mandate. They know that the People are against it, so they are going to claim to be against it themselves. Why? You've got to get the votes somehow, and with the GOP's track record on keeping promises they need all the help they can get. At least the Democrats do what they say, no matter how wrong it is.

You know, it's actually kind of funny. Obama decried the PATRIOT Act as unconstitutional as a Senator, and yet signed legislation to RENEW it as President. The GOP long ago came up with the idea of the individual mandate, the Heritage Foundation championed it, and since the other party passed it they find it convenient to now admit that it is unconstitutional. That's a heck of a flip-flop right there...
