"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country," Obama told an intently listening crowd gathered at the White House Friday evening to observe the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."

The small city of East Point, Georgia, took steps to prevent chaos from breaking out Thursday, a day after more than 30,000 people unexpectedly turned out to pick up public housing applications.

...People from all over the country were in the lines, hoping to get the applications.

And people had waited for hours, even days, in line for the applications. Candice Dixon -- who has three children and is 37 weeks pregnant -- said she had been in line since Monday.

Seriously, you should watch the video at CNN's website or below. 30,000 people from as far as New York and Chicago clamoring for an application for Section 8 housing assistance for which they could very well be waiting more than 10 years.

You hear it all the time. The GOP and much of the right wing claim unwavering support for the Constitution and freedom. Yet when a religious issue comes up, they go back against their words.

The latest example is the mosque that is slated to be built about two blocks away from where the World Trade Center fell. While it may indeed be an act of Islamic triumphalism, it is not the place of government to restrict a religious entity from building a place of worship.

Elena Kagan was confirmed to the Supreme Court earlier today according to the New York Times.

Of course, the Republicans are still griping about her lack of experience, even though they embraced the same lack of experience in Bush II's 2005 appointee Harriet Miers.

This appointment by Barack Obama won't really change the complexion of the Supreme Court. A silver lining for conservatives is that Justice Anthony Kennedy will be in control of who writes the more liberal majority opinions.

So sayeth Judge Henry Hudson in ruling that the Virginia lawsuit against Obamacare is serious (rather than frivolous as Nancy Pelosi would have you to believe).

He goes on to write the following regarding the government's Tax Clause argument:

No reported case from any federal appellate court has extended the Commerce Clause or Tax Clause to include the regulation of a person’s decision not to purchase a product...

Keep in mind that while this is a small victory in showing that the States do indeed have standing in bringing lawsuits against the individual mandate, this decision does not rule in favor of either party. All it does is dismiss the federal government's argument that the States lack standing and allows the case to proceed.

The Washington Post reports:

U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson rejected arguments from Obama administration lawyers that Virginia has no standing to sue over the law and no chance of ultimately prevailing in its constitutional claim.
